About the Event
In conjunction with the Monmouth Public Library, a zoom conversation will be hosted with the author Maria Smilios, who wrote “The Black Angels: The Untold Story of the Nurses Who Helped Cure Tuberculosis.” The book is available for purchase at the Heritage Museum Store.
Maria Smilios learned about the Black Angels while working as a science book editor at Springer Publishing. As a native New Yorker and lover of history, medicine, and women’s narratives, she became determined to tell their story. In addition to interviewing historians, archivists, and medical professionals, she spent years immersed in the lives and stories of those close to these extraordinary women.
Maria holds a Master of Arts in religion and literature from Boston University, where she was a Luce scholar and taught in the religion and writing program. The author lives in New York, and the live Zoom conversation will happen on March 20th at 6PM. It will be screened at the Heritage Museum and the Monmouth Public Library. Additionally, log in information will be available to watch the event from the comfort of your own home.
