Description

004 Gallon crock with lid, Albany glaze, ca 1880. Good condition, but lid is chipped and repaired. ($60)
This one gallon crock is an example of the pottery produced by the Oregon Pottery Company of Buena Vista, a few miles south of Independence along the Willamette River. The Oregon Pottery Company was founded by the Smith Family from Iowa in 1865. The company functioned in Buena Vista until 1883 when it moved to Portland, and began to manufacture sewer pipe as its principal product. Little attention was paid to the surviving pieces of this local crockery until recently, when collectors and historians began to appreciate their hand-made character and the direct link that they provide to Oregon' s pioneer heritage.
-From 'Pottery on the Willamette' by Blaine A. Schmeer
This crock was donated to the Independence Heritage Museum by Robert & Jan Gragg.
