Subtitle - "Local commuters and fun-seekers counted on the Peanut-Roaster to get them from town to town"
by Lana Russ of the Sun-Enterprise
A newspaper page about Virgil Bewley, his father and railroads that focus on the train between Monmouth and Independence carrying mail, milk cans, and passengers. The train was propelled by a Model T engine. They took the tires off of a Model T chassis and put iron train wheels on. They carried a turntable with them so the could turn around when it was time to come back. John Bewley (Virgil's father) was an engineer for the I & M (Independence & Monmouth) Railroad Line owned by Joe Hershberg. The line went from Mon/Indp to Dallas & Pedee/Airlie area. They made $100 a month in 1917 & 1918. Saturdays were busiest when folks went to town for dances, shopping or other activities. The train held 12 - 14 passengers. The Peanut-Roaster's final trip was in 1918 when they pulled up the track .
Note: There is evidence of the train running in 1912, this article says early 1900's
