Description
|
Framed newspaper story on Herbert Powell of Monmouth. He was a retired four-star US Army General and 78 years old when this article was written.
After graduating from college with a major in journalism he chose not to go into the field. Instead he enlisted as a private in the Independence National Guard in 1919. He was only 16 at the time. Three years later he was a sergeant.
During his career he participated in five campaigns in the World War II European theater and another five in Korea. He retired in 1963 but he was still appointed by President John Kennedy as Ambassador to New Zealand where he and his wife Beryl served for 4 years in the Embassy.
